Our history
Originally from Cameroon, Robinson Ngametche is an ethnologist and cultural heritage specialist who has been living in Quebec since September 2010. He is the designer of the project Discover my cityThis project quickly became a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote the social and cultural integration of immigrants into Quebec society.
It is a project that was born following the multiple requests made to him by immigrants on questions of historical knowledge and cultural landmarks during the years 2014, 2015 and 2016, when he was working at the Habitations du center multiethnique. It was from there that he had the idea to propose as an ethnologist a tour of the city based on the discovery of the cultural heritage of the city.
Its goals are to develop a sense of belonging among immigrants, to promote the cultural heritage of Quebec City as well as that of immigrants, and to promote living together as members of their host society through socio-cultural activities. The originality and specificity of this project lies in the fact that the emphasis is placed on the role, contribution and positive contribution of immigrants to the development and influence of Quebec City
The project has been a resounding success from its launch in the summer of 2017 to the present day. Thanks to this project, Robinson got the 2019 Heritage Award from Quebec City in the Dissemination and Interpretation category. In addition, Robinson has been working since the fall of 2020 at the SNQC (Société nationale des québécoises et québécois de la capitale) as the coordinator of Quebec's national holiday and project manager of cultural events in the National Capital Region. The SNQC is an NPO whose mission is to promote Quebec through its language, history and cultural heritage. It is the organization that has the mandate to coordinate the Quebec National Holiday in the National Capital Region.
Through the cultural heritage of the city, in order to promote their contribution to Quebec society, to raise awareness of the positive contribution of Afro-Quebecers on the socio-cultural and political-economic level, because this contribution is very poorly known not only by the Black communities themselves but also by the host community, we will proceed with many activities including:
1) Research and inventory of Black people who have contributed to the emergence of Quebec City's cultural heritage in order to create a database that can be consulted via a Web and mobile application that will be created;
2) the enhancement of the Discover My City heritage tour: a tour of Old Quebec based on the role and contribution of immigrants to the influence of Quebec City;
3) the intercultural evening that highlights the rapprochement and intercultural understanding between the black communities and the host community;
4) the creation of a web and mobile application through which one will consult the lists of African Quebecers by sector of activity, having marvelously succeeded in their integration and impacted their society;
5) the design of a new heritage circuit involving all of the municipalities in the national capital, with particular emphasis on the various sites that have a remarkable link with the community of African descent in Quebec City and its municipalities.
